Founding of the Mathias Corvinus Collegium

The Mathias Corvinus Collegium, established on the initiative of the Tihanyi Private Foundation in 1996, is a pre-eminent extracurricular educational institute in Hungary and has an outstanding reputation for its academic excellence. Its founder, Balázs Tombor devoted a considerable amount of money to the education of students demonstrating both extraordinary talent and an exceptional commitment to the welfare of their closer community and their country, and who wished to study applied or theoretical social sciences to underpin their future engagement in public life.

The aim of the Foundation is to provide these students, irrespective of their socio-cultural background, with tuition-free quality education and exceptional opportunities. The former provides students with a curriculum involving courses that apply a different approach than university lectures surpassing them both in level and content. The latter includes free accommodation and good infrastructure, companionship of similarly motivated and talented fellows, and the chance to get to know influential personalities (like the Presidents of the Republic of Hungary) whom they would normally not have the chance to meet.

Funding and Start-Up

Young professionals with experience in quality foreign education developed the framework of this unique educational institute, including the elaboration of the training scheme and the recruitment of professional partners for the college. At the same time, in order to ensure the necessary financial resources, it was essential to find sponsors appreciative of the long-term benefits of the Foundation and willing to make generous contributions of different kinds to serve the Collegium’s objectives.

In August 1999, the Foundation received a considerable grant from the government of Hungary and began setting up the Collegium. The organisational structure of the Collegium was thus formed: a professional board consisting of heads of MCC programmes and majors took charge of making strategic decisions, and a competent secretariat was set up to handle operational and technical challenges. Upon completion of the preparatory works, the Collegium opened its doors in late spring 2001.

Mission

The MCC is an unconventional college. Only few non-academic institutions in higher education in Hungary have such an elaborate and well-structured curriculum. From its foundation on, the Collegium has aimed to be a think tank, a laboratory of social sciences, a place where ideas are developed, analysed, evaluated and disseminated across Central Europe.

College Motto

“Bonus intra, melior exi” is MCC’s official motto, which translates to “come in good, go out better”. This succinct sentence is the guiding philosophy of the Collegium: only the best and brightest may and should have the opportunity to enter the college, in order to leave it as cultured and useful citizens. The motto has been incorporated into the college seal and emblem depicted on the left.
